Kinfolk inspired home

Kinfolk begins with the way we live and expands to home, style and more. The Kinfolk Movement is inspired by a mix of Scandinavian and Bohemian styles and is based on a philosophy of slow living. Think upcycling, minimalism, or anything rustic and you are well on your way to living the kinfolk lifestyle.

If you are looking for ways to incorporate Kinfolk style into your home, here are a few ideas to help make it happen:

Make and grow, not buy

The case for making rather than buying is strongly rooted in practicality. Remember the days when your grandmother could knit a new sweater in a flash? Kinfolk encourages people to learn new skills and take back old-world common processes that have been altered for mass-production.

For example, if you want new cushions for your couch, follow a tutorial and learn how to make your own.

This outlook can be taken to the outdoors too. Like growing a basic vegetable garden so you don't have to rely on the grocery store for certain plant staples.

Artisanal crafts

Kinfolk coincides with Bohemian style by incorporating ethnic and artisanal decor elements such as jute rugs, macrame art, batik fabrics and berber floor cushions.

When you do need to buy something, try to purchase it directly from a maker. This has been brought to the forefront with the push to shop local since the beginning of the Covid 19 pandemic. Part of the kinfolk spirit is connecting with other people who are living creatively with intention.

Adopt a minimalist approach

If you thought Scandi-style was stripped bare, kinfolk pairs back interiors a step further. So forget items like occasional tables.

Shape-wise, the Swedish and Danish designs are a favourite, especially in living areas.

Keep the palette simple

The Kinfolk colour palette is specific in that it's very minimalistic.

For painted surfaces, keep to washed out shades of pale green, white and pale grey.

As far as art and accessories go, grey-scale or black and white photographs are a favourite, as are botanical illustrations done in pale watercolours.

Recycle and upcycle

This is one of my favorite ways to incorporate the Kinfolk ethos. To reduce waste, look creatively at the things you are going to throw out. Old glass bottles can become vases or candle-holders. Old wooden furniture can be moved outside for a new life or given a new look with chalk paint.

Embrace nature

Part of the kinfolk ideology is to get back to nature and create a simple, nordic-insipired atmosphere. Incorporate indoor plants as much as possible. Try for a mix between floor plants in baskets and hanging plants. Choose natural fibre textiles like jute, wool, hemp, rattan and wood.

I hope this helps guide you to create a kinfolk-inspired home. Thanks for reading.
